WAYFINDING SIGNS

WAYFINDING SIGNS

As well as showing passing trade what you do with an exterior sign. You also need to think about the clients inside your business once they get there, how they will be directed, and any information you need to get through to them in terms of where they should sit, or directions they should take when moving around your building. Wayfinding signs do just that.

There are four types of wayfinding signs: identification, directional, informational, and regulatory. They all work together in a larger system, serving a specific role to help people find their way around, showing them where they are, where they’re headed, and what rules to follow.

These signs tell you when you’ve reached your destination or serve as landmarks along the way. They’re straightforward and help you know where you are. Examples include signs on doors (like “Assistant to the Regional Manager”), department markers (like “Accounting and Finance”), and landmark signs (like donor plaques or historical markers).

These signs guide you on how to get where you’re going. They’re like invisible hands pointing you in the right direction, especially at junctions or places where it’s not obvious which way to go. They need to be consistent so you don’t get lost.

Examples include signs at junctions (“left to cafeteria; right to an exit”), colored lines on the floor indicating different routes, and directory signs showing where specific places are located.

These signs give you general information about facilities and services. They’re usually placed where lots of people pass by, like reception areas or building entrances. They should be easy to understand at a glance, answering common questions people might have.

Examples include signs about amenities (like free Wi-Fi), facility locations (like bathrooms or exits), and business details (like hours of operation or addresses).

These signs are about safety and rules. They tell you what you can and can’t do in a certain area. They’re usually big and clear, leaving no room for confusion.

Examples include signs about rules (like “no smoking” or “no firearms”), compliance standards (like ADA accessibility), and access control (like “employees only” areas).
